Cast on 40 stitches on the set of 4 mm double pointed needles, join in the round taking care not to twist the stitches.

Knit the ankle in 1/1 rib for 12 cm.

Turn the work and leave the other 20 stitches on hold.

Row 2 (purl): Slip 1 stitch and purl 19 stitches.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until the heel height is 6.5 cm, ending with a knit row.

Knit the heel pad as follows:

Preparation row on the wrong side of the work: Knit 14 stitches then 2 stitches together.

Turn the work, leaving the left stitches on hold.

row 1 (right side of work): Slip a stitch, knit 8 stitches, knit a simple overlock (Slip a stitch, knit a stitch and cast the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch.) then turn, leaving the rest of the stitches waiting .

Row 2: Slip a stitch, purl 8, purl 2 together then turn, leaving the rest of the stitches on hold.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until there are 10 stitches in total for the heel piece, ending with a knit row.

Work the gusset as follows:

Go back up by knitting 12 stitches on the left side of the heel. Take another needle and knit the next 10 stitches (put on hold before forming the heel.).

Take another needle and knit the next 10 stitches (put on hold before forming the heel). With a fourth needle go up 12 stitches along the right side of the heel then knit 5 stitches of the heel piece in a row.

Your needles are now distributed as follows:

Needle 1: the 5 stitches of the heel piece + 12 stitches brought up along the left side.

Needle 2: 10 stitches from the top of the foot.

Needle 3: 10 stitches from the top of the foot.

Needle 4: 12 stitches raised along the right side + 5 stitches from the heel piece.

Begin the gusset decreases as follows:

Row of decreases:

Needle 1: Knit until the last 3 stitches, knit 2 stitches together then knit 1.

Needle 2 and 3: Right side together.

Needle 4: Knit 1 stitch, 1 single overlock and finish the needlework in place.

Alternate a row of decreases then a knit row until you have 10 stitches on the 4 needles.

Knit the foot as follows:

Continue to knit until piece measures 15.5 cm from heel line.

Begin the decreases for the tip of the foot as follows:

Row of decreases:

Needle 1: Knit to the last 3 stitches, a simple overlock, a knit stitch.

Needle 2: Knit 2 stitches together, finish needlework.

Needle 3: Knit to the last 3 stitches, a simple overlock, a knit stitch.

Needle 4: Knit 2 stitches together, finish the needle.

Alternate a row of decreases and a knit row until you obtain 3 stitches on each needle = 12 stitches.

Knit the 3 stitches on needle 1.

Place the 6 stitches from needles 2 and 3 on one needle and the 6 stitches from needles 1 and 4 on a second needle. Sew the toe of the sock using kitchener stitch.

Knit a second similar sock. For a warmer version, replace the cotton with Aran wool. (Do not hesitate to sew a sole under your sock to avoid slipping with it.)
